I encourage everyone I know to travel as much as possible, but when you’re out there seeing the world, it’s important to be a smart traveler. Today’s guest post comes from Sheila Kurdinger, who shares seven and a half tips that can help you be safe while gallivanting across the globe.
Traveling the world can be quite an adventure. Unfortunately, sometimes everything doesn’t go exactly as planned. This is why it’s important to plan ahead so that you can travel safely. The tips and advice below will help you get the most out of your trip, no matter where in the world you travel.
Tips for Safe Travel
Here are some basic tips for safe traveling.
Keep money separate – While you want to carry money on your person, of course, you don’t want to carry ALL of your money around. Instead, make sure you have a good hiding place for the rest of it back at your hotel.
Scan those documents – Before you leave, make sure you scan all your important documents and keep one digital copy as well as printing out an extra copy. This doesn’t take a lot of time and can really help you out.
Travel insurance – Another good idea is to get insurance before you set off on your adventure. While you might not need this, it’s always nice to know that you have a little protection if something does go wrong.
Vaccination – Depending on where you’re going, you may need to get vaccinated. This costs money and is not the most pleasant experience in the world, but it can help protect you when you’re in a foreign land.
Don’t show off – While you may be proud of the fact that you’ve been able to accumulate a lot of money, you don’t want to show off when you’re in a foreign land. Flashing large stacks of money can only lead to problems.
Give up valuables – If you are robbed or mugged, give up your valuables. They can be replaced. Your life, however, cannot be replaced. Because of this, it’s better to just give crooks what you have at the time – and see the above note about travel insurance.
Don’t give out money – While people coming up to you and asking for money may seem like an easy way to help someone out, this is NOT a good idea. If you really want to help, spend some of your vacation time volunteering to help out.
And, since we promised you “half a tip,” here’s a little extra advice: make sure you still have fun when you’re traveling! While you want to follow the tips above to make sure you stay safe, you still want to make sure that you have a good time. Otherwise, what’s the point of going on vacation at all?
If you have any of your own advice for traveling safely, please leave a comment and let us know what you do personally to stay safe when abroad.
