Making the Most of Your Trip to Munich, Germany

When guest author Mary Bell approached me about sharing her post about some of the must-sees in Munich, Germany, I couldn’t resist. Although I haven’t yet had a chance to travel there, I’ve heard nothing but great things about the city, and I figured some tips would be useful for when I do get to visit some day. And now for some oohing and ahhing about beautiful Munich.

The Bavarian capital of Munich in southern Germany is an outstanding destination for travel. The bustling city has countless things to see and do; the only problem is squeezing many of its great attractions into one trip. From the biergartens to the beautiful parks, this cultural hub is one of the top modern cities in Europe to see.

After choosing from one of the many accommodation options in Munich that can be easily found even for reasonable prices (for example on Venere.com – you will see there is no need to be afraid of all the rumors proclaiming Germany to be expensive), you have to then decide which places are on the top of your list to see. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your experience in the wonderful city of Munich.

When people first think of Munich, they think about beer. One of the things that you have to do when in the city is to sit and enjoy a drink at one of the many famous biergartens. The food and drink atmosphere, usually found in some of the city’s beautiful outdoor spots, is something truly unique. It is a perfect way to cool down on a hot afternoon or to simply get a feel for the local culture by hanging out for hours and people watching. Some of the best biergartens are located around the Englischer Garten, which is also an amazing place to visit. This park has incredible gardens where many locals go to relax during their free time. Some people even sunbathe nude, so be prepared for a free, laid-back atmosphere!

A fantastic way to do some sightseeing on your own in Munich is by taking a bike tour through the city. Whether you rent a bike and do a personal tour or book a guided tour, biking is a fun and healthy way to get around the tourist destinations. The city is tailor-made for biking, with its bike paths and big squares that make the experience worthwhile and stress-free. On a tour, you can pass the gothic Rathaus, or town hall, and see the incredible architecture of the Frauenkirche Church. Another great destination is the Olympic Park, where the 1972 games were held. Wandering around the city, you are bound to stumble upon amazing avant-garde and modern architectural wonders.

A great destination for the more artsy side of the city is Haidhausen, which is located on the right side of the Isar River. Originally a working class area, it has slowly been taken over by a community of hippies and artists, making it a fun place to walk around and enjoy the thrift shopping and many cafes. It is a great area for younger folks who want to enjoy the clubs or the cool atmosphere of the neighborhood.

Lastly, one of Munich’s best things to see is the Residenzmuseum, which housed the Bavarian rulers for centuries. The palace has incredible artwork on display, as well as treasures owned by the nobility from the 16th century through the First World War.
